Does kata (forms) help you with self-defense? Your Answer
Does Kata help with self defence... You KNOW that's gonna spark debate;
here's my part of the fuel for the fire Bottom line? Yes... sort of... Kata are a definite asset to training; they help with form and bring familiarity to the various techniques.
They also, unfortunately, breed habit with specific responses towards some actions. I believe that if a student is learning a Martial Art, Kata are a must (if included in the specific art).. If a student is strictly learning self defence, they should likely stay away from hard-set forms and concentrate more on confidence with a few select techniques. This is said with the premise that self defence is a specific end as opposed to a devotion to training.
Philippe
Kata adds to the art in the martial arts. It adds nothing to self-defense ability other than a broken jaw from chamber punching and not keeping your hands up.

Anytime, any day.

It depends on whether the stress on the style is tournaments or combat.

Training Your Unwilling Spouse in
Realistic Martial Arts I had a bit of a harder time training Jan since she wasn't interested in self-defense at all, so I could not even send her somewhere else as some of you would have suggested. Being in martial arts 26 years myself, I didn't want Jan to be one of those unfortunate people who decided to train after they were attacked. No matter what the odds are of being attacked, they end with one. Jan however, was willing to help me to workout, ahhh my opening. Years ago I had discovered an interesting thing about learned reflexes (the correct term for the repetition of a physical movement repeated enough so that the movement can be done without conscious thought). This discovery was made when, for the purposes of improving balance, follow through, and internal energy training (just another physiological principle with a fancy name), I began doing slow, tai chi like, sparring with my students. My assistant head instructor, Sensei Kyle Kaiser, especially enjoyed sparring slow motion. After two weeks of doing nothing but slow motion sparring with Kyle, I looked at him and said, "You know what we have to do now don't you?" He said, "Yes" and we sparred full speed full contact. We discovered that his sparring had improved significantly. The learned reflexes developed, with further time to study them do to the decrease in speed I may add, improved and the retention was present even when the speed and stress level were increased. Can you train someone using just slow motion sparring? No just like any other drill it has its limitations. The timing is different at full speed and as mentioned, the stress level is different at full speed. Drills for these factors must be accommodated in other drills myself and my students execute. Procedure for Slow Motion Sparring Students may begin by facing each other or working alternate angles of attack which is also recommended for realism. There is a tendency for beginners to speed up until they are going almost full speed, defeating the idea of the drill and increasing the chances of injury. I recommend having one advanced student with a beginner to do this drill. Slow motion sparring is a great drill for even first day students. It's slow enough so that the student is relaxed and the student gets the opportunity to get used to seeing attacks coming at the student's head and body. Slow motion sparring begins like normal sparring, but the attacks must be so slow that head contact can be made and followed through upon without pain or injury to either student. Blocks and evasive movements should be performed similarly without having to speed up to avoid being struck and executed in an economical realistic manner with the exception of the slow speed and no snap. If you have to speed up to avoid being hit you would have been hit in a real situation. I cannot overly emphasize the importance of controlling the speed of this drill. No snaps to your punches, the slower and more fluent the better. Now as you are attacking and defending, try to feel your body, especially your hips flow with all of your movements. When you speed up, your power will come from your hips and your stability. Your blocking and evasive movements will depend on how quickly you see an attack coming, knowing where you are already open, and your balance. All of these factors can be improved with proper use of slow motion sparring. Concentrate on making this a meditative type exercise such as Tai Chi. Stay as relaxed as you possibly can. if you begin doing something that makes you tense up, stop executing that movement and find a relaxed, fluent way to accomplish your task. When you strike your partner,
strike with no snap, slow motion, and with a complete follow through except to
the knees and groin if your partner is not wearing protection. Avoid following
through on any area or at anytime you feel the area or situation may cause
bodily harm. This is one of the few times you will be able to execute a complete
follow through on another individual without causing them bodily harm. Execute
your follow through with the use of your hips and utilizing your stability. If
you are pushed back on your follow through or lunge forward if you miss you are
off balance and unstable, not a good combination for doing a follow up attack.
As you strike do a complete breath out. Breath during the entire strike and
follow through. The breathing will help control your speed and well as aid you
in your follow through. This is true for both slow motion and full contact.
When you block, although you are going slow motion, think realistically. Do not catch punches or block feet with your fingertips. Use short slow blocks. I prefer that my students use deflective blocks as it helps to insure them staying relaxed through the exercise. Deflect your partner's force, evade your partner's force, practice using your partner's force against your partner. If you are struck or are dissatisfied with a block, repeat the attack or preferably the combination over and over until you are happy with your block. This gives the partner a chance to repeat an effective combination, and it gives you a chance to learn to block and effective combination. This repetition of movement, increases learning speed substantially. If you are training realistically be sure to include slow motion tackles grabs and chokes. I know it seems silly to tackle slow motion, but the previous statement of learned reflexes being maintained as the speed increases remains. I began doing slow motion sparring with Jan and continued with it even well into her pregnancy. Her blocking and striking movements at first seemed uncoordinated and gross (too big). As Jan began getting used to seeing strikes coming at her, blocking and evasive movements improved. Her stability of her basic kicks and hand strikes improved also. Remember, I taught her nothing outside of explaining the drill, showed her primary striking areas, and she improved. Better still because the speed was controlled, I was able to work complicated combination of attacks on her which helped me to keep up my skills. Do I recommend that as a drill when your partner is pregnant? Slow motion sparring is an excellent drill when controlled and one makes no mistakes what so ever. However the chances of making a mistake are always there so see a doctor, exercise caution, do not follow through if your partner is pregnant, and if you are unsure of your abilities at all to control yourself do not do it. There are plenty of drills that can be done with a pregnant partner that do not involve strikes. My conclusion is that slow motion sparring may be incorporated as a major effective drill for teaching good martial arts. It is an effective use of the gestalt method of teaching. Slow motion sparring is an effective drill not only due to the results that I and my students have had, but also due to the flexibility of the drill. It can used for multiple attack, weapons training, one on one self-defense and anything a good instructors imagination will lead too. Thank you for your support Rick Sensei J.
