I now have a place where you can add your favorite martial arts techniques. Even if it is already on the martial arts techniques page, feel free to add your martial arts technique again so martial artists may see how popular the martial arts technique is. Right now this is being done with form mail. If anyone can set this up as cgi with an autoreponse email I'd appreciate the help.

Martial Arts Striking Drill Air Shield Economy Drill

Here is an excerpt from my martial arts book (click here if you are in my martial arts freeware shareware CD or ebooks) Bringing The Martial Arts Out From Within Drills to Improve Your Natural Biological Abilities to Defend Yourself.

I have used this striking drill successfully to give the self-defense student an accelerated knowledge of strikes from many different angles. A research study I once read indicated most martial artists who successfully defended themselves did so when attacked from the front. If you think about how most martial artists train, you will see the reason for this. This striking drill is designed in part to help the self-defense student to be comfortable at all angles of attack.

Air shield economy drill is a martial arts striking drill I developed many years ago. Another purpose of air shield economy drill is to help the self-defense student discover their own martial arts striking techniques.

Equipment Needed for Air Shield Economy Drill

A martial arts air shield designed for striking or a large cushion. I strongly recommend using the martial arts air shield as it is designed to be able to absorb martial arts strikes.

Two to four focus mitts or two to four thick pillows. Again I strongly recommend using the focus mitts as opposed to the pillows for striking as the focus mitts are designed to absorb impact from the strike

Procedure for Air Shield Economy Drill

The self-defense student stands in the center of the room. The partner holds the air shield in a safe manner.

The partner begins walking around the self-defense student

The partner stops and holds the air shield at the angle of his or her choice.

The partner calls the number one.

The self-defense student turns his or her head and finds the target.

The self-defense student strikes the target utilizing the closest weapon to the closest target. If this is the first time the self-defense in has ever struck a target, it should be done slowly until the self-defense student gets used to striking objects with his or her body. Later on, as the self defense student begins getting use to hitting objects hard with his or her body, the self defense student should began striking harder and following through more on the targets.

If the self-defense student strikes the target utilizing good economy of motion, the partner repeats the first step calling out the #2 this time.

If the self-defense student strikes the target utilizing poor economy of motion, the self-defense student must strike the target again utilizing better economy of motion.

The partner and the self-defense student can continue repeating this striking exercise until the partner calls out the #10.

Removing Weapons

I am the firm believer in limiting the working environment to force the self-defense student to think of techniques that the self-defense student would not have normally thought of. Therefore, the next set of strikes self-defense student does may made only be done with his or her feet, knees, and head (be careful of neck injury when practicing head butts). This forces the self-defense student to think of techniques that he or she would not normally have thought of.

The next set of strikes the self-defense student may do will only include the hands, elbows and head.

This pattern of removing weapons continues until all combinations of limbs and all limbs separately have been done

A Variation of Air Shield Economy Drill

Follow the same steps above but use a focus mitt

The stress on this variation of air shield economy drill is on focus and follow through. Caution; be sure to keep your striking limb joints slightly bent at the end of your follow throughs.

A Second Variation of Air Shield Economy Drill

Follow the same steps above but use two focus mitts

The stress on this variation of air shield economy drill is on combinations.

Remember there are no rules except safety where the partner holds the focus mitts or air shield. It is up to the self-defense student to think of the most economical way to strike the target. You and only you are responsible for your safety when practicing this drill or any other drills. You and only you are responsible for any injuries. Always see a physician before executing any physical activity.

Advantages of Air Shield Economy Drill

The self-defense student develops a variety of striking techniques.

The self-defense student develops a kinesthetic sense (an awareness of your body in space).

Since the self-defense student is striking an object, stability against pressure is developed.

The self-defense student learns to generate power and a variety of angles.

The self-defense student develops a base of understanding for learning martial arts techniques in the future.

Disadvantages of Air Shield Economy Drill.

There's not enough repetition of single striking techniques to increase learning speed of a single striking techniques.

No blocking is practiced during air shield economy drill, but this is a striking drill

No counterattack in is practiced during air shield economy drill, but the idea is to isolate your self-defense skills in order to improve them.

Conclusion

Air shield economy drill stresses creativity and imagination in self-defense students and self learning martial arts strikes from a variety of angles. Air shield economy drill has a place in all realistic martial art schools from beginner to advanced.

I set this up so you can upload any contributions of articles you may wish to make for our world wide martial arts family. It will accept doc, htm, or html files. Thank you and mahalo (thank you in Hawaiian)
