Martial Arts Drill Offense Defense Your Martial Arts Ezine Issue 18

You are receiving this Martial Arts Ezine because; you subscribed to this Martial arts Ezine, you are a friend of Sensei Kirkham, a friend forwarded this Martial Arts Ezine to you, we added your martial arts link to our page, you placed a classified to our free classifieds, links and graphical links page at http://tutor.hypermart.net/freeclass.html, or you are a dedicated martial artist.

If you subscribed to the Martial Arts Ezine and do not wish to receive it any longer simply return the mail with unsubscribe as the subject. I apologize for any trouble this put you through.

I'd like to thank everyone for the wonderful contributions of articles, classifieds, and link exchanges. I've, thus far, received nothing but support and good wishes from our fellow martial artists. It is interesting to note that some of the most dangerous people in the world are also some of the nicest people in the world and we do mean world. This is the World Wide Web. Your articles classifieds, quotes, and links are seen by martial artists and martial art enthusiasts all over the world! If you submitted an article and it wasn't in this issue of the Martial Arts Ezine, keep looking. For now I'm just going to stick with one or two articles per Martial Arts issue. I truly appreciate your contribution and it will be used in an issue of the Martial Arts Ezine. In the meantime, because you were kind enough to contribute, I will keep your classified ad and or link in the Martial Arts Ezine at least until your article appears.

Welcome to our martial arts ezine. I'm Sensei J. Richard Kirkham, your host and editor. There will be no prejudices in this martial arts ezine. We will accept articles from tournament fighters and self-defense specialists. For a short period of time, anyone who contributes to the Martial Arts Ezine can place a free advertisement with us. Who is us? All of you, the contributors, the readers, the advertisers. As I seem to be quite good with web sites, this Martial Arts Ezine will also be posted be and registered with up to 900 search engines and links. As another service I offer is to enhance a web site for search engine and sales protocols and register the web sites, http://tutor.hypermart.net/submit.html, to search engines, many people all over the world will see your articles and advertisements. For now, if you do not wish to submit an article, but would still like to place an advertisement, which as of now, will show up on the Martial Arts Ezine web site and be sent to our subscribers and contributors of the Martial Arts Ezine. Hard copies of the Marital Arts Ezine are now available $3.00 black and white or $6.00 in color. Faxed copies are $2.00

As you can see I am trying different formats and I NEED YOUR HELP. DON'T JUST UNSUBSCRIBE IF YOU DON'T LIKE SOMETHING GIVE ME SOME FEEDBACK SO I CAN CHANGE IT. Remember , I'm still a white belt in editing. I would also like to know what you think of receiving links to the articles, classified, free electronic greeting cards, and search engines or if it is more convenient, although averages 50k, for you to have this all right there in your email where everything is accessible right there as long as you're on line. I'm also toying with the idea of sending you half the article and the option for you to continue on the web site. This way you know if it is something you are interested in or not. Anyway some feedback would help me a great deal.

We are now accepting ads of any type. We hope this will help non-martial artists to understand the martial arts better.

 Cost of ads per issue:

Classifieds $2.00 per issue

Banner or business card size as $10.00 per issue

You may send your check or money order to the name below.

Remember since we have also become a hardcopy newsletter you may wish to include a phone number in your ad especially if you want to attract local business.

You may want to consider printing hard copies out of the Martial Arts Ezine and giving them to potential students or customers containing ads or articles that you have submitted.

Offense Defense Drill and Variations

The best way to train for any activity including martial arts is to emulate that activity as closely as possible to the real thing. Another important factor in martial arts training or any type of training for that matter is to break the skills apart in order to work on them separately. Pole-vaulters for example will spend entire practice sessions just working on their approach. I do something similar with my self-defense students by separating their offensive and defensive skills.

This is what I refer to as an abstract martial arts drill in that there are no set patterns. Yet, I will often do this with my martial arts students even the first day of their self-defense class at a controlled pace. The advantage to this martial arts abstract drill lies in its flexibility. Self-defense situations come up or can be made up which could take months to actually approach with any "official" capacity. I would say that a disadvantage to the drill lies in its lack of repetitiveness and therefore decreases learning speed for actual martial arts techniques. Any martial arts exercise has advantages and disadvantages. I would challenge any martial arts instructor to come up with a perfect drill for all self-defense situations.

Purpose of the martial arts drill offense-defense: to increase the self-defense student's skills in attack and defense by separating the two martial arts skills.

Procedure for the offense defense drill

In the beginning, partners begin by facing each other. As the self-defense students' skills improve, they can begin at various angles of attack.

One partner begins his attack. I have chosen 40 as the number of techniques for them to execute towards their partner. I did this because it could create an even number of techniques from all the limbs, although this is not usually the case. I chose not to use timed sessions, as it is easier to stop the drill to make corrections and recommendations. The slow beginner martial arts student also is able to execute the same number of repetitions as the faster advanced martial arts student.

The pace is controlled by the attacker, instructor, and the defender through verbal communication. Padding is worn for the protection of both the attacker and defender and techniques are pulled unless I am the defender.

Partners may attack anyway they wish in the first set. Because I teach a realistic self-defense system, anything which may happen to them out in the street is allowed as an attack, i.e.; tackles, kicks, elbows, knees, etc.. According to research, what a martial artists lacks in offense, he or she will also lack in defense. It is very important to me, therefore, during this drill to attempt to simulate as many situations and techniques as I possibly can.

If a student is "struck", by his or her partner, the combination of techniques are repeated until a block is developed by the student and even past that until the student is comfortable blocking said attack. This also has the advantage of the partner repeating an effective attack and therefore practicing this effective combination.

After both student and partner have had their turns at offense and defense, I then take away weapons and sometimes defensive tools by limiting the limbs with which they can use to attack or defend. This helps to promote creativity and imagination in even advanced students due to the fact that their favorite ways to attack or defend may be suddenly not available to them and they are forced to think of other combinations and methods of both offense and defense.

Examples of Variations of Offense-Defense

Attacker: both arms and both legs

Defender: blocks both arms and both legs, evasive movements

Attacker: both legs

Defender: blocks single arm per set, evasive movements

Attacker: both arms

Defender: evasive movements only

Attacker: single side limbs (right side then left or visa versa)

Defender: block with a safety weapon (short range such as a safety knife)

Attacker: contralateral limbs (right leg left arm, then left leg right arm or visa versa)

Defender: Any variation you like or anything that makes the student slightly uncomfortable (and therefore needs to be trained more in that area)

Attacker: safety weapons

Defender: empty handed

Attacker: safety weapons

Defender: safety weapons

Attacker: empty handed

Defender: safety weapons (short range such as a safety knife)

As you can see, the variation and speed of this self-defense drill is infinite in its flexibility. Even new beginners to a martial arts school, working this drill at a slow pace, making blocks and strikes up as they go along, which may be refined later, can benefit from this drill.
