The following is an excerpt from the e-book, "Science, Concepts, and Principles of Empty Handed Combat" written by Grandmaster Scott Stansell. Grandmaster Stansell is a 9th Dan Black Belt in Lung Tsu Do Kenpo. He is also the founder of the Sons of the Dragon Combat Martial Arts Society

Fighter's Attitude, Fighter's Pyschology, and Facts About Adrenaline and Endorphines

These are some of the most important subjects in this manual. Good techniques are great and with knowledge about attitude, pyschology, and natural chemicals; you'll be even more of a threat to an attacker.

I hope that you read, study and re-read it often. You would be wise to have a thorough understanding of these subjects. You will learn many fighting techniques, concepts and principles within this book, but they will do you no good without the information in this chapter.

These subjects deal with the thought processes of you as well as the enemy. I will cover how the conscience mind and the subconscious mind should work as a team during a confrontation. In large, we will deal mainly with psychosomatic muscle memory of both the enemy and yourself, and how to force learn and change psychosomatic muscle memory in yourself to become a more effective empty handed combatant. I will also help you to identify certain psychological attitudes in the enemy and help you to identify certain psychological attitudes within yourself to help you to become even more effective.

The mind, during stressful situations, is controlled by several key elements: natural muscle memory, natural chemicals, and possibly foreign chemicals as well. As I mentioned in the previous chapter, natural muscle memory is the physical and mental habits that you learn to do throughout your life starting at a very early age. These effect what we think, do , and say. Most are so deep within our subconscious that we are not even aware of some of these automatic actions and responses.

Why do so many fights end up being a wrestling match? Because of natural muscle memory. Experience taught us if we hold a moving object still, we can gain control of it. How and when did we learn this? In our youth as we learned to play games with our toys and/or peers. When children "play fight," they learn not only gross motor skills, but also basic grappling and maybe some punching as well. As we got older we also learned about aggression. So when most people get into a physical fight, they do what comes natural. A few punches get thrown and then they grab each other. Let the wrestling match begin. There are two surface reasons why most people do this:

  1. Control the other person to avoid getting hit, and

  2. Control the other person to deliver a good hit.

This is the normal standard for most people but there are exceptions. There are some people in this world that are naturally good fighters. Some people grow up in aggressively hostile environments and have keen survival skills because they had no choice. They were either raised in that type of environment or they were forced into it. These people have developed both good fighting skills and the ability to mentally withstand the stress of hostile situations. They already have the "fighter's attitude."

The "fighters attitude" is the ability to control the stress of fear and rage within you and adapt to and overcome the rage and hostile intention of your attacker in a hostile situation. To control these factors you must start by accepting, adapting to, and overcoming your emotions and the emotions of your attacker. Without "fighter's attitude," no technique in the world will help you in a real fight.

To help you further understand the "fighter's attitude," let's look at athletes that are involved in contact sports. When a football player hits the field, his conscience mind is focused, confident, and aggressive. He might be a nice, humble person off of the field but while he's on the field, he's "The Terminator." If you've ever seen boxing champion Oscar De La Hoya in an interview, you probably noticed that he's a very humble person. He smiles alot. He doesn't brag. He's just an all around great guy. But the moment he steps into the ring, he transforms into a force to be reckoned with. It is their subconscious mind that dictates what action they will do. That is where the techniques are stored and memorized. When the ball snaps or the bell rings, their actions will flow based upon what the opposition does or doesn't do.

Personally, I'd like to think that I'm a very nice person. Most people tell me that I am. When I am confronted with a situation that could looks like it could turn hostile, I instantly change. My conscience mind is focused on confidence and aggression. I am like a dragon, tiger, snake and a "beast" all rolled up into one. My subconscious mind takes care of the kinetic end of what I will do from that point forward in the given situation. This is basically how you learn to act and react in combat in the U.S. Army Infantry School. Don't get me wrong though. If mere words are flying and that is it, then you can more easily walk away from that type of situation. You must watch the other person's body language for aggressive intentions and over tones.

Natural chemicals can either help you or hinder you in a fight. Testosterone, adrenaline, and endorphines are all natural chemicals that work in our body and have various effects both physically and mentally. I'll cut to the chase and leave out the medical mumbo jumbo. All three of these natural chemicals can work together in highly stressful situations. They can cause a person to be a strong, and highly aggressive fighter that has a high threshold for pain, but they can also cause you to have the fighter's shakes, which is basically self doubt and fear. That in turn causes you to hesitate during an altercation. I'll explain how to control that in another part of this manual.

There is another type of person that is controlled by natural chemcials, or the lack thereof. These people have what is known as a "chemical imbalance." Most cases require the person to be medicated. You can recognize this type of person in an altercation by their rage alone. You literally have to beat them senseless to stop them. Add certain foreign substances like alcohol or other mind altering drugs, and the effects of the bodies natural chemicals can multiply in any given direction; either uncontrollable fear or uncontrollable rage.

Some of the opinions in our society lean toward a more "turn the other cheek" attitude when it comes to self defense. Some people are taught that you must walk away from a confrontation and that you are the better man for this. I saw a guy get the back of his head smashed with a beer bottle one night for trying to walk away from a fight with another guy. He's probably got brain damage, numerous stitches in his head, and psychologically effected for the rest of his life because he chose to be "the better man" and walk away. I don't know about you but I'd rather the "jerk" that wouldn't just walk away than the so-called "better man" with a hospital bill.

Having been in those type of situations on numerous occasions (I was a bouncer then,) I would have struck the other guy first with an eyejab strike and then I would get that bottle out of his hands.

Folks, remember this: there is no better man; no winner or loser; either you survive or you don't. Either you walk away (scathed or unscathed,) or you don't. When people tell me otherwise, I tell them to go and stick to something that they know because they undoubtably have never been in a real, knock down, gouge eye, blood flowing fight before.

It comes down to this....

You can't control someones else's attitude but you can control your attitude and the hostile situation that you and your attacker are both involved in. You can re-learn and re-make yourself into avery effective empty handed combatant. In doing this, here are two things to consider:

  • Techniques: Too many ingredients spoil the meal. You need to use a small amount of techniques that cover a wide variety and angles of attack. The techniques that you use must be powerful, fast, and capable of damaging your adversary both mentally and physically. They must be able to do this no matter how well your adversary can take pain or no matter what state of mind he is in prior to the encounter. All of the techniques in the e-book, "Science, Concepts, and Principles of Empty Handed Combat" are designed to do just that and more. These techniques are direct. They are also combined with the science of Dynamics, meaning several forces contribute to one full fluid motion to give the maximum power and speed necessary to do the job.

  • Attitude: You must develop in yourself the proper fighter's attitude. Don't spend your time trying to emulate the personality of Cain from the television series "Kung Fu," or the Mr. Miyagi in "Karate Kid." You must be confident and aggressive. A passive attitude during a fight or even in the pre-fight stage of a confrontation can get seriously "took out." That doesn't mean that you should walk around with a chip on your shoulder. It doesn't mean that if you are confronted by a potential attacker, you should taunt him or talk garbage too him. It means: be confident, don't show any intimidation, and definetely don't turn your back on him.

The following techniques, concepts, and principles are designed around the principles of proper attitude, fighter's psychology and the figher's creed: Strike first... strike fast... strike hard... strike last.

I put the word FREE in here so that those of you martial arts ezine subscribers I want to read this would read it. Let me start by saying most of you are wonderful readers and I have some great martial arts article contributors, and anyone can contribute a martial arts article article to this martial arts ezine, but recently both Master Pascal's martial arts newsletter and my martial arts newsletter have had some experiences where I feel I need to explain the real world to some of you.

Master Pascal had an unworldly reader ask him why he cannot give all of his ebooks out for free, after all they did not cost him anything to make. Well, I'll tell you, it cost Master Pascal over 20 years of blood, sweat and discipline plus an M.A. in the Art of Teaching to be the martial artist and FULL TIME writer he is today. Anyone of you who does not appreciate this and consider it to be valueless needs to raise their own family and try to feed them from your own hard work. So if you are getting Master Pascal's martial arts e-zine, please consider supporting his hard work.

For myself I will only mention one incident. Recently a new subscriber requested an article on beginning chi exercises. I took my time to email this person back, explaining I had an entire ebook on the subject and he did not even have the courtesy to email me back. If you don't want to support this martial arts ezine by getting your martial arts material through me, that's one thing, totally ignoring me is not respectful and is not the martial way. I take time to answer any emails directed to me and I expect the same courtesy. So please, let's remember our contributors, and myself have families to feed. One hand washes the other, unless the other one is always held out.

I put my 28 years experience, my background in Movement Education, Exercise Physiology and Physical Education degree AND my heart and soul into my books and videos to try to help you be the best martial artist that you can be. Why not give me a chance to help you to become an even better martial artist?

I'd like to thank all my contributors and dedicated martial arts ezine readers for their support.
