PROGRAMS YOU SHOULD CONSIDER USING
Back
to Table of Contents Please understand, the
only affiliation I have with any product or business mentioned
is that I am, or was at one time, a customer of the company
which offered the product or service. All software names are
trademarked and copyrighted blah blah blah legal stuff.
Windows 3.1 or Higher Windows allows you to
cut and paste pictures and text from one program to another.
Cutting and pasting means highlighting the text or picture
that you want to use by dragging your mouse across the text
while holding down your left mouse key, or by clicking on the
picture in one program in order to copy it into another.
Simply highlight your text or click onto your picture
(graphic), go to edit found in the tool bar on top of your
screen in your program. Click on edit using your left mouse
key. From edit, select copy and then go to the program you
want to "paste" your picture in, select paste from
edit and in most programs, your picture will appear on the
screen so that you can add it to the document you're working
with.. The advantage of this method is that you do not
necessarily need an all purpose program, such as "Corel
Draw" in order to do the things you want or need to do
with graphics (pictures) and text. Corel draw and other such
all purpose programs now have earlier versions out on the
market now. If you can not afford the newest version, you may
be able to purchase an earlier version for less. Also check
with anyone who may sell used software (always run a virus
check on used software). For information on this you may call
573-783-8765 Ext. 3 Windows 95 has better drivers and
interfaces and you would probably end up getting that
eventually. Windows 95 requires a computer speed of 386 DX or
higher. I would recommend at least a Pentium nowadays (1996).
Microsoft Publisher M.S. Publisher has
many formats possible to use including business cards and
posters. I personally often combine this program and P.S.
Deluxe. Print Shop Deluxe and Print Shop
Deluxe Companion Print Shop Deluxe together with
Companion allows you to do almost anything as far as pictures,
posters, business cards, post cards, mailing lists and labels
etc.. Keep in mind these are programs I personally
like to use. There are many good programs on the market and
they should not be excluded in your search for good software.

for my services to
train you to make a good advertisement. No you don't know what
you want already and the customer may know his product, but
not know the best way to sell it. I've been sent to special
schools for sales, management, public relations, and
advertising. Plus, I am a dual state certified teacher. Which
makes me fully qualified to show you the best way to keep your
customers by showing you how to make the best possible ad for
them! Just about any business, full or part time
utilizes business cards. One of the first things a business
just opening usually does is order business cards. Why not
from you? Go and see them. They would probably appreciate not
having to leave their office. Make sure they see a proof
exactly the way the cards will look and get at least a verbal
okay. Don't let them have the proof without fixing it
somehow so that they cannot just copy the proof on their own.
I personally have never been adverse to getting at least one
half down before doing the job (after showing them the proof).
When you show them the proof, also show a flyer you had
designed for them as well. Again, feel free to leave it with
them as long as it says "sample" or something to
protect your work from being copied. Business card stock can
be ordered through this author if you want to avoid having to
hunt for it. Flyers

the Laundromats. Who has hand made flyers on it? Get their
number, call them, and tell them you can design a flyer for
them at a nominal fee (perhaps $10.00) that they can run off.
Or that you can run off flyers for them in color (perhaps
charging .50 to $1.00). You need any type of ink jet printer
to do this. Dot matrix printers leave white areas in pictures.
Microsoft Publisher allows you to make pull tabs, as I'm sure
many other programs do. I have found pull tabs help keep my
flyers on bulletin boards longer. When you design a
flyer, get full approval from your customer before running off
the flyers. Basically follow the same advice I gave you in the
business card section. Be sure to give them samples of other
work you can do for them such as business cards.
Don't lose contact with your customer. They may be too busy to
contact you or may not be aware of other services you offer.
Scanning
Back
to Table of Contents If you're just scanning text,
all you need is a gray scale scanner. You may be able to get
by with a cheap hand scanner for under $100.00. Your scanner
should come with an o.c.r. program (optical character
recognition) which will allow you to convert scanned images
into editable text. Many companies are trying to get all their
correspondence into a computer now and rather than type it in
they would rather hire someone to scan it in. You may consider
charging $2.50 a page unedited or $5.00 a page edited.
This is up to you of course. A color scanner is almost a
necessity if you're going to scan colored pictures in. This
has unlimited service potential: Fixing and
reprinting old pictures Scanning pictures onto disk to
be put into the Internet Scanning pictures onto the hard
drive to make a slide show Part of a flyer, banner or
business card graphic Putting a graphic on disk so they
can make their own flyers or cards Etc. All
scanners come with software allowing you to edit your image
which is what is used to fix an old picture, cut someone out
of it or, with more difficulty, add someone into the photo.
You can also crop images. A very useful tool wherein you draw
a box around what you want to keep by choosing a dotted box or
arrow, depending on the program, located in a tool box to the
right or left usually. Click your left mouse button to choose
the tool and press the left mouse button down when drawing the
box. Go to edit or image and choose crop. All that is left is
what you drew your box around. Don't forget to save your work
if your sure it's what you want. If you crop a graphic and
decide you don't want it cropped, click onto edit and choose
undo located in the first window of edit after you click edit
once with your left mouse key.
Bumper Stickers
Back
to Table of Contents Bumper sticker stock can be
ordered from yours truly. Make an original on regular
paper with your printer. Simply make a sign using landscape
mode and put 2 bumper stickers on it. If you do not have the
ability to print your own bumper stickers you may contact me
to do so at
http://tutor.hypermart.net/magnetic_signs.html
. My prices are still low enough for you to make a good
profit and once again, your customer is getting everything
from one source - YOU! Calendars
Back
to Table of Contents I'd stick with one page for
cost effectiveness, unless they want to pay you enough for
your time. Both programs I presently use offer a calendar
format. Print Shop Deluxe is easier to use, but Publisher
seems more flexible. Remember to use pictures and
graphics to draw attention. Do not draw away from the idea of
the work you are doing with too many graphics or too much
writing in one space. Remember the main idea is to get
customers to come to the business. With my experience in sales
and advertising I can, with confidence, tell them what
probably will and will not work. In the end however, the
customer is paying the bill, so they're the boss.
Posters
Back
to Table of Contents The programs I use allow you
to print larger than acceptable paper size. In many cases you
can make up to a 16 sheet 8 1/2 by 11 inch per sheet poster
depending upon your printer. Most printer inks, unless you
refill them yourself (another service) with non-water soluble,
non-fading ink, will fade and run in sunlight and rain
(ask me how I know). Contact me if you need a poster that will
spend time outside or in the sunlight.
http://tutor.hypermart.net/magnetic_signs.html Voice
Box Service
Back
to Table of Contents Advise your customer to get
call forwarding. You will need a voice/fax modem and the
software, which should come with the modem, to create voice
boxes for your customers where they can receive voice messages
and faxes. With most programs they will be able to check for
messages and faxes remotely. By having the customer use call
forwarding, your client does not have to give his/her
customers another phone number to call. You may want to
consider a second phone line for this and/or a second
computer. Dating
Service
Back
to Table of Contents With the potential of the
software and voice/fax modems, running a dating service with
your p.c. is a definite possibility. I would advise doing
something special to get ladies involved. They seem to be
harder to draw into these services as compared to men.
Although I do not mean to sound chauvinistic, generally, if
you get the ladies involved, the men will follow wherever they
go. Titles for
Videos
Back
to Table of Contents You'll need a camcorder or
borrow one from someone. I hate to actually give this one
away, but here it goes - in most cases you can make a title
for a video right off the screen of your computer. If you have
a karaoke machine you can even add special sound effects. You
can also get fancy (and expensive) by purchasing a video card
with an output to the v.c.r. or t.v. and a sound card with a
wave table. MORE
WITH CAMCORDERS AND V.C.R.S
This isn't exactly computer stuff except for the fact
that you can use your computer to make a title.
Capturing Pictures
On Video
Back to Table of
Contents This can be done either with expensive
equipment (a video card with video output to a v.c.r. which
can be purchased for under a $1000.00) or, and again I hate to
give this one away, using your camcorder and white poster
board. Just set your camcorder as close as you can to the
picture on the poster board and try as much as possible to
just get the picture itself and as little of the poster board
on video for about 10 seconds using the zoom. Watch your
lighting and make sure there aren't any shadows over the
picture, especially moving shadows which ruins the entire
effect. Putting
Music to Video Movies
Back to Table of
Contents Using a karaoke machine, you can put music
on an otherwise boring video tape. You can also do the same
thing with pictures although don't try to capture the pictures
and put the music on at the same time unless the music and
camcorder are connected by one switch. Flyer
Distribution Service
Back to Table of
Contents Regardless of whether you make the flyers
or someone else does you can offer, for a fee less than
postage, to deliver the fliers yourself. If you
work on any of these businesses and are serious about it, you
will recover your investment in this booklet many times over.
However, the bottom line is - what you get out of
any business is exactly what you put into it. Is
This Booklet Worth The Price ABSOLUTELY NOT!
Considering this booklet contains information it took me 10
years to obtain; considering this booklet gives you ideas it
sometimes took me 10 years to think of; considering this
booklet tells you mistakes I've made in the past so you won't
make them; considering the amount of money this booklet could
make you, it is absolutely not worth the small price you
pay for it! About The Author
