Procedure for Martial Arts Heavy Bag Drills

As many of my martial arts ezine readers know, I am a firm believer in removing weapons to force you to think of executing combinations you would not normally think of doing if you had use of all your weapons. Being slightly ADHD and tutoring students with behavioral problems, I try to vary the martial arts workouts as much as possible to keep interest and avoid boredom.

  1. Warm up You may use the warm up in my Knife Use and Defense Video if you like.

  2. Begin at a medium speed to make sure you are completely warmed up fighting with all your weapons hands, feet, knees, elbows, head (very gently and avoid it without a physician's permission) , etc.. I personally like to practice going high and low, low and high. The more I can get my attacker to move his arms the better chance I have of hitting him. Be sure not to make this a permanent pattern. Any predictable pattern is a bad pattern.

  3. You may set your time or number of repetitions. I use one minute or 40 reps.

  4. Okay, now it's time to start isolating. Why isolate? For the same reason you break down any sport or activity into its components. To improve each part of an activity in order to improve the whole. You have a weak left? Guess what? Spend an entire set with just your left. Use it or lose it people. We all develop favorite martial arts techniques and become dependent on these martial arts techniques. One of the best ways to develop new blocking and striking combinations is to remove the ability to use your favorite blocking and striking combinations.

  5. You may now do your martial arts combinations with only your lower weapons kicking and knees. You can evade a phantom attacker or the swinging bag by slipping ducking and side stepping. See my section on evasive drills in Bringing The Martial Artist Out from Within

  6. Follow steps one through five using only upper body weapons, head, hands, elbows. You may also block phantom fighters or the bag with the weapon limbs you have available to you according to the limitations.

  7. Follow steps one through five using your right arm weapons and left leg weapons

  8. Follow steps one through five using your left arm weapons and right leg weapons

  9. Follow steps one through five using your right arm weapons and right leg weapons

  10. Follow steps one through five using your left right arm weapons and left leg weapons

  11. Follow steps one through five using your right arm weapons. You may be thinking there is little you can do with one limb as a weapon. If you are thinking that you'd better keep practicing.

  12. Follow steps one through five using your left arm weapons. You may be thinking there is little you can do with one limb as a weapon. If you are thinking that you'd better keep practicing.

  13. Follow steps one through five using your right leg weapons. You may be thinking there is little you can do with one limb as a weapon. If you are thinking that you'd better keep practicing.

  14. Follow steps one through five using your left leg weapons. You may be thinking there is little you can do with one limb as a weapon. If you are thinking that you'd better keep practicing.

  15. Now let's isolate even further. By the way this order is not strict you may follow any order you like. Think think think use your creativity and imagination. Follow steps one through 14 but do each set first with your right leg back (orthodox fighting stance) then do the same set with your left leg back (unorthodox fighting stance). When you are only allowed to strike with just your left hand and you must keep your left leg back you will come up with different ideas and combinations if anything to keep from being bored stiff! Can you do a semi-rising elbow strike to your attacker's solar plexus then a hammer fist to his nose with just your left hand? Of course you could!

  16. Repeat any technique or combinations of techniques you are not satisfied with throughout your sets.

  17. Still bored? Add external weapons to the same set pattern, but don't use nunchakus on the heavy bag. The day I got my green belt and was allowed to touch weapons I picked up a set of nunchakus, placed one end under my armpit, struck at the bag and watched the end promptly bounce back and hit me in the forehead. Just be careful with loose and wooden weapons on the bag.

Does this look similar to my 10 minute martial arts workout with weights in my martial arts ebooks and one of my martial arts articles? Why yes it does. Break it down, put it back together, break it down, put it back together. Repeat repeat repeat (no I didn't forget my commas). If there is a combination or a side you are not comfortable with, that is a weakness you'd better work that combination or side even more!
